How to link PAN with Aadhaar?

 If you haven’t yet linked your Aadhaar with your PAN card, it’s essential that you do so before March 31, 2023, as per a government directive. PAN card holders who aren’t in the “exempt category” are obligated to link their PAN with their Aadhaar before this deadline, or their unlinked PAN will become inoperative.

How to link PAN with Aadhaar

So, what exactly is the exempt category? The exempt category includes individuals residing in the states of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya, as well as non-residents as defined by the 1961 Income Tax Act, individuals aged 80 or over during the previous year, and those who don’t have Indian citizenship, according to a notification released by the Union Finance Ministry in May 2017.

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal here.
  2. Register, if you haven’t already done so.
  3. Log in to the portal.
  4. A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with your Aadhaar. 
  5. If the pop-up doesn’t appear, go to ‘Profile Settings’ on the Menu bar and click ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  6. Verify the PAN details on the screen with the PAN details on your Aadhaar. If there is a mismatch, you must first correct this.
  7. If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click on the “Link Now”.
  8. A pop-up message will verify the successful linking of PAn with Aadhaar
